After being paired with Soma, the MC finds herself thrown into an undercover case dealing with the yakuza. Soma wants to show the MC the darker side of what being a PSD entails, and the MC has conflicted feelings when she’s told that she’s the “best person” to be a PSD in that respect. She gets chosen to be Soma’s aide, but as she spends more time with him, she starts to see a darker side of him hiding behind his gentlemanly smile.
Soma is a gentleman. He’s kind to everyone, and always greets people with a smile. It’s easy to forget that he’s a respected PSD of his own right, since he doesn’t seem to have any skills that stand out as much when compared to the rest of the instructors (with the exception of kendo). However, you see that his kindness isn’t always for free; the MC notices that he hides something darker under his smile, and her suspicions are proved right when he introduces the MC to the concept of using collaborators to gain information for Public Safety. His nice demeanor isn’t completely a lie, but Soma isn’t afraid to use it to manipulate people and win their undying loyalty. It’s hard to understand what he’s thinking since usually hides his true intentions, but he’s not completely cold.
The MC starts to fall for Soma early on in this route, mostly due to his personality. Goto, Kaga, and Ishigami aren’t the nicest people, and when playing Soma’s route I was caught off guard by how nice he can be at times. He is manipulative, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. You’ll find yourself comparing Soma and Kurosawa to each other (at least I did) due to the fact that both of them seem too “nice” to be part be PSDs, and trait that the MC also shares. However, instead of throwing it away, she learns to use her kindness to her advantage, something that I liked since she’s constantly being told that she’s “too soft” in the other routes.
I think this route did a good job at introducing Soma as a character, especially since he’s a new one and not a repeat like Goto or Ishigami. You learn a lot about him in this route, but I still think Voltage barely scratched the surface; he’s a complex character, and I’m looking forward to seeing how much he changes once he starts to open to the MC more. The plot wasn’t as good as Ishigami’s routes, but I still enjoyed it. I can’t wait until his MS2 gets released; the happy end took me by total surprise, and I’m eagerly waiting for more since I want to know what’s going on (you’ll want to know too, trust me ; w ;). If you liked HLITF so far, I definitely recommend this route. It’s a bit different from the previous routes due to Soma’s personality, but all the central aspects of the game are still in there. Happy playing!
